The Clairs: What's Your Spidey Sense?
A breezy guide to understanding clairvoyance, claircognizance, & more.
Magic = The Science We Haven’t Figured Out Yet
Let’s start with a question: Have you ever just known something to be true? Maybe you predicted something before it happened. Or maybe you saw a ghost as a child? Or perhaps you met with a medium who told you something they had literally no way of knowing.
If any of that resonates, this post is for you.
For the skeptics—hi, I was you!—I want to preface this by saying that after diving deep into the science, I no longer see any of this as woo-woo. That may be controversial or “crazy”, and a few years ago, I might have dismissed it, but the research conducted by our own government and some of the largest, most prolific academic and research organizations is empirical and indisputable.
The more I explored both my own abilities and those of others, the more I realized this is simply another way to tap into energy—a tool we can use to navigate life more effectively.
Think about it: Have you ever thought of someone just before they called? Walked into a room and instantly felt the energy shift? That’s you tapping into what’s known as The Clairs—our ability to see things without our eyes. These are a set of intuitive senses that allow us to perceive and interpret energy beyond the five physical senses.
For some, these senses are dialed up to full volume; for others, they’re barely audible. But like anything, awareness is the first step to understanding how we can use them to our advantage.
At its core, this isn’t mystical—it’s energy. We are all energetic beings. Everything in the physical world—including our bodies—is made up of vibrational frequencies. Accessing intuition, psychic abilities, or whatever you want to call it, is simply the ability to tap into unseen energy fields. It’s science or, more specifically, quantum physics.
The good news? We all have access to it. The question is—are you paying attention and tapping in?
My Ah-Ha Spidey Sense Moment
About four years ago, I did a reading with an intuitive who told me I was claircognizant. At the time, I had no idea what that meant. I’d heard of clairvoyance (thanks to psychics in pop culture), but I didn’t know there were different types of intuitive perception.
She explained that my ability to “just know things” without understanding how I knew them was my form of intuition. Ideas, insights, and messages come to me in the form of my own thoughts. And the moment she said it, something clicked. It was like someone had handed me the missing key to a door I didn’t even realize was locked.
Up until that point, I had dismissed these moments of insight as random thoughts or coincidences. I didn’t trust them. I’d get flashes of knowing—an idea for a business, a feeling about a person, a sudden urge to text someone—and I’d second-guess myself. But after that reading, I started paying attention.
When I had the thought that a friend had just had her baby, and it turned out she was literally pushing at that exact moment? That was real.
When I casually mentioned to someone that they should pursue a particular path, and months later, they told me that conversation changed their life? That was real.
When I leaned into my more innovative, disruptive ideas in business—and watched them work? That was real, too.
Recognizing this ability didn’t just give me confidence; it gave me a new tool for navigating life. And the more I trusted it, the louder it became.
The Clairs—And Which One Might Be Yours?
Before we get into the different types, let me be clear—this isn’t just for the people who love the woo and believe in magic. I’ve gone deep into the science behind tapping into energy fields we can’t see, and that’s really all this is. Whether it’s psychic abilities, claircognizance, or some other clair, is simply a matter of tapping into an unseen energy field.
Think of it like a light switch. Some people’s switches are completely off, leaving them in the dark. Others have theirs turned on, but the brightness is on a dimmer—maybe they see (or sense) things, but it’s not 100% clear. And then there are those who have their brightness turned all the way up, navigating life with intuitive clarity most people don’t even realize exists.
The key is recognizing that this ability is on a spectrum. We all have it—it’s just a matter of whether we’re tuning in or tuning it out.
Your Intuitive Six Sense: The 4 Clairs
Each clair is a different way of processing, interpreting, and acting on energy. Think of them as different ways your intuition speaks to you:
Clairvoyance (Clear Seeing) – The Visual Energy Download
You receive intuitive information through images, visions, or symbolic flashes.
How to Experiment: Before making a decision, close your eyes and ask for a visual. Does anything pop up? Try writing it down and see if it holds meaning later.
Claircognizance (Clear Knowing) – Instant Energetic Downloads
You just know things without knowing how. The insights or downloads come via your thoughts, making them tricky to distinguish from your actual thoughts/intellect.
How to Experiment: Write down any gut instincts you have each day and track their accuracy over time.
Clairsentience (Clear Feeling) – Tuning into Emotional Energy
You physically or emotionally feel energy shifts.
How to Experiment: Before entering a space, take a deep breath and observe how you feel before interacting with anyone.
Clairaudience (Clear Hearing) – Messages in Sound
Intuitive messages come through sound, like hearing words in your head or meaningful song lyrics. This is my husband’s strongest gift, and it’s been wild to see how music and sound act as a tool for him, especially as he’s become aware of it. My little witch in training <3
How to Experiment: Pay attention to sudden lyrics or phrases that pop into your mind randomly. You may also hear subtle “voices” as you drift into a dream state. Yes, a bit creepy:)
Note: There are also Clairalience (Clear Smelling) and Clairgustance (Clear Tasting), which are less commonly experienced, so I decided not to focus on them.
Now, Let’s Dive Into The Science
For my skeptics in the room, let’s talk about science.
The Brain’s Predictive Power: Studies show that the brain constantly makes predictions based on unconscious information, meaning we often “know” things before our conscious mind catches up.
The Gut-Brain Connection: The vagus nerve directly connects the gut (AKA our second brain) to the brain, which is why gut feelings are real and not just a metaphor.
The Observer Effect in Quantum Physics: Research shows that simply observing a particle can change its behavior, implying that perception itself plays a role in reality.
So, whether you view this as an innate human ability, an energetic sensitivity, or a sophisticated form of pattern recognition, one thing is clear: perception extends beyond what we've been taught, and materialism alone no longer explains our reality.
How To Start Applying To Your Life
Tuning into your dominant clair can help you make faster, more aligned decisions. Start by noticing patterns and keeping track of when your intuition "hits." The more you acknowledge it, the stronger it becomes. Just like our muscles, you need to flex these senses to make them stronger.
